Herbert’s Ghost

“Come on, we didn’t come here for nothing!”

Ralph’s friend Joey begged him to enter the house, but Joey was afraid. There were stories going around that the ghost of Herbert Sanders haunted his abandoned house on Winchester Street. Herbert was an old man who lived in the house all by himself, rarely going out. For Halloween night, Joey told Ralph that they should spend one night at Herbert’s to see if it was haunted, and now that they were in front of the old house, Ralph was scared.

However, Ralph would feel bad if he left Joey, so both of them went inside the two-story house. The door creaked open as they snuck inside. They turned on their flashlights and the glow from them bathed the living room. The furniture was neat and undisturbed, while the TV was still plugged in. If it weren’t for the dust covering everything, they would have thought that someone was still there.

They walked slowly into the kitchen, remembering the stories about plates moving and chairs arranging themselves. However, the plates and chairs were all in one place.

“This is boring,” Joey remarked as they began going up the stairs right next to the kitchen. The stairs made a creaking noise with each step, yet there was nothing out of this world about that. Once they reached the top, their lights danced around the corridor.

At first, goose bumps covered their arms as they thought they saw a ghost, but it turned out to be their lights bouncing off a small mirror in the back. They split up at this point and checked each room. Ralph went inside the bathroom, noticing how the scrubbed toilet and the spotless bathtub. Meanwhile, Joey explored the storage room. He found old pictures of Herbert when he was young, pictures of his children and grandchildren, and junk galore, but no sign of a ghost. Both met up in front of the last room they had yet to explore. That would be Herbert’s bedroom.

“If there’s a ghost, it would definitely be in there,” Joey remarked. Ralph’s heart began to pound as both of them went inside the room.

A bed greeted them, along with a dresser, another television set, and a closet. They investigated every inch of this room, looking in his closet, under his bed, and even outside his window. As Joey stood at the window, light beaming over his face, he let out a sigh.

“I guess ghosts aren’t real,” he said as both of them started to leave the room. As they went to the open door leading to the hallway, it shut right in front of them. They turned around, hearing the sound of someone yawning. The ghost of an old man was lying on the bed, still in his ghostly pajamas.

“Even in death, I still can’t sleep thanks to you annoying kids!”

Joey and Ralph both shouted as they ran for the door, opening it. They went through the corridor, down the stairs, and out the house, not stopping until they made it to their homes.
